Rhode Island is made up of many cities, and districts. Although it is one small state, the school districts have many differences between them. Lets take a look at Newport.
Newport, RI is located on the southern portion of an island in Rhode Island. Newport is also a giant tourist place, therefore the area by the beach looks rather nice and upper class looking. However, there are many other parts of Newport that the tourists don't see, which is the area where the lower and middle class citizens live. This area is never really visited by tourists, causing them to think that Newport is one of the "rich" towns in Rhode Island, when in reality it is far from it.
Newport, Rhode Island is just another city in the state. The economic levels in Newport, RI are relatively high compared to the rest of the country. The median household and family incomes in the city of Newport is slightly higher than in the state of Rhode Island and even in the country; Newport: $56,802, $78,197; Rhode Island: $55,569, $71,037; United States: $51,425, $62,363. The income per capita in Newport ($35,816) is also higher than Rhode Island ($28,638) and the United States ($26,059). Poverty levels increased‍ all throughout the United States (family: 9.9%, individual: 13.5%). Rhode Island specifically has a slightly lower level (family: 8.1%, individual: 11.6%) and if you narrow it down even further to the city of Newport (family:5.1%, individual: 10.6%), it is even lower. There is nothing extravagant about this community that sticks out in the nation; the levels are close to average, especially regarding economics.
Economic well being plays a big role in affecting the education that a child receives. The economic standing of the family determines the resources that are available to the children. For example, if the family cannot afford heat in their home, the temperature of the house can be a major distraction, and children may not be able to get their work done. Another thing would be school supplies. If the family can't afford school supplies, how will the child be able to do their homework and get other work done. The amount of children in extreme poverty under age 6 is 413 out of the 7,230 extreme poverty struck children in Rhode Island, which is a lot in a tiny town such as Newport.
Newport is relatively packed in terms of population density per square mile. That is similar to the rest of Rhode Island. As a whole everyone is packed together. In these densely packed areas, nearly a third of the children of Newport live under the federal poverty threshold while the ratio of those living under the poverty threshold in Rhode Island is less. That means there are a lot of people that live closely together and are not meeting the sufficient means of survival in Newport. This may be perpetuating the poverty or even other problems in regards to safety and health. The health and safety numbers show that Newport is not as well off as the rest of Rhode Island clumped together. It is quite possible that the poverty level and population density are contributing or perpetuating these conditions.
The races in Newport, RI is predominantly white people, rest of the population is mostly Black and Hispanic students. The lowest number of students are the Asians, who only make up 55 out of 6,609 Asians in Rhode Island. Race and ethnicity can be huge impact on the way the child is raised and how they learn. Different customs and family styles can greatly mold the child and make them grow up a certain way. Race and ethnicity definitely play a part in the well-being of society.
Newport is not the most diverse community in the state/country. A large portion of it's people are white(90.5%) compared to the entire state(82.8%), and then to the country(74.5%). Black/African Americans are the next most common in the area, making a 6.0% out of Rhode Island's 5.5%, and the United States' 12.4% The most uncommon race within the city is American Indian or Alaska Native(0.1% in Newport, 0.4% in Rhode Island, and 0.8% in the United States).
Health indicators can definitely play a huge role in the way a child learns in school and how they grow up. Newport children only add a small amount (1,989) of the population of kids receiving medical assistance in the entire state of Rhode Island (92,701). Being in foster care can also make a huge impact on children. Although only 59 out of the 2,175 students in Rhode Island are in Newport, those 59 kids may be slightly deprived due to their placement in foster care.
Most of the safety indicators have to do with violence that is brought upon children in school and at home. The child abuse and neglect rate in Newport is more than double the amount then the rate in the entire state of Rhode Island. Although the rate seems higher, the actual number of children being abused in Newport is somewhere between 4 and 5 hundred kids out of over 16,000. However those 400 kids are now being physically and emotionally abused and this could greatly affect their performance in school.
The Newport school system is doing significantly better than Rhode Island as a whole. All of the schools meet proficiency within Newport, where fifteen percent of the schools throughout the state of Rhode Island are not meeting proficiency. Even two percent more of students are graduating in Newport than within Rhode Island as a whole. Suspension rates are tad-bit higher, which suggests that Newport students are a little more undisciplined than all of Rhode Island together. To conclude, the education in Rhode Island is poorer as a whole than within Newport on its own.
Newport although pretty in some areas, is not so spectacular when you take a closer look. The district would benefit from improvement in every area.
